We use ncursesw. It's pretty cool but won't compile on a lot of machines. Library dependencies and all that fun stuff will be sorted out eventually.

[edit] Unicode

We use Unicode to be able to display a whole bunch of cool characters instead of being just limited to ASCII. There's probably a reason why this hasn't been done before to great reputation, but we'll find out soon enough.
